First Post (!!!): Barbie, the Oscars, and more

So this week the 2024 Oscar nominations were released. I agreed with a lot of them! But then I got on Twitter. And oh brother these people were PRESSED. “Barbie was snubbed!!” “Greta was snubbed!” “Margot was snubbed!!!”
This made me irate. So let’s get into it.

First and foremost, Barbie was not a good movie.
I’m going to let that resonate with everybody for a second. Really let it sink in.

Was it funny? Sure! Was it enjoyable? I mean yeah! But was it Oscar material? NO!!!!! Barbie is a good movie in the way that perhaps 21 Jump Street is a good movie.

That being said, it does not deserve to be nominated for an Oscar. Any Oscar at all! Now, specifically, I do see why people are mad about Ryan Gosling’s nomination and Margot’s lack thereof. However!!!!!! America Ferrera was nominated! And both of those nominations were for Supporting Actor/Actress. So it’s not like Ken was nominated for Best Actor and Margot not nominated for Best Actress. Furthermore, America’s performance was sooooo mid. Like that “monologue” was just plain old garbage!!!! You guys!!! Let’s do better!

Now, I’ve seen a lot of people complaining on behalf of Barbie in the name of feminism. If you think that this movie has anything interesting, new, or impactful to say about feminism, I am BEGGING you to re-evaluate your conceptions of feminism and re-evaluate this film as a whole. This film did not show us anything new. The feminism it did attempt to convey was basic and fell flat. It was the epitome of 2010s white feminism. We have got to move past that. It’s ridiculous.

Additionally, you know who WAS nominated for Best Actress? Lily Gladstone! The first Native American to be nominated in this category!!! Let’s celebrate that!!! Why are we crying over a white blonde woman (who gave a mediocre performance) not being nominated when we have this historic nomination right in front of us???? If this were truly about feminism, the reaction would be extremely celebratory and focused on Lily’s excellent performance and historic nomination. So to bring all of this rage under the guise of feminism is just plain ridiculous.

I will only be dedicating one sentence to Hillary’s reaction. Girl….

So besides all of this garbage, let’s focus on the good!!! Hello Cillian nomination!!! I love the Irish! I think Oppenheimer deserves all of the good ever. That movie was so awesome. I have yet to watch Killers of the Flower Moon, but I’m sure that will be taking a lot of the Oscars home as well. I am going to be dedicating the period before the awards to watching the rest of the Best Picture nominations I haven’t seen yet. (Which Barbie is one of!! So actually stfu about it being snubbed!!!)

In other news, the Grammys are February 4. I am hoping and praying for a Midnights sweep. I have also started the Bachelor and I’m watching the Bear so expect updates and reviews on that!!!
